Sermon 7/22/2022
Today's topic is the following question: What does it mean to have faith
The New International Version is where I found this verse.
1 Corinthians 2:5
“So that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”
What does 1 Corinthians 2:5 mean to me you ask? Well, what does it mean to you? Please share your interpretation of this verse!
[Waits for the audience to volunteer their interpretation of the verse]
To me, the first part where it says “so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom” asserts the second part of the verse where the end of the sentence says “but on God's power.” Human wisdom is untrustworthy because we are biased, we try to make the truth fit us instead of us fitting the truth. We try to make the truth bend our way. That's when truth becomes untruth, because we would rather tell a lie than to face the truth. We tell this distorted version of the truth to ourselves, to others and sometimes we even convince ourselves that the truth that we think is right is the factual truth rather than the actual truth itself.
The Ten Commandments:
You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall make no idols.
You shall not take the name your God in vain.
Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
Let's start with the commandments going in reverse order.
“You shall not covet.” This can lead to stealing, bearing false witness against your neighbor, dishonoring your parents, making the Sabbath day a day of crime, taking the Lord's name in vain, bearing false idols and having other Gods that are all the devil himself. Having any other God but God is Satan and therefore Satanic. Why do I start with this one? Well, because coveting something leads to lying. You want to hide something also known as coveting to stray people away from the truth. It ruins the holy day of the week which we regard Sunday as. Some people murder others to keep their coveted lies covered up! Lies are a way of bearing idols by idolizing false ideologies. In short, there is no other true religion other than Christianity. Bringing other deities before God robs him of what he deserves, and he deserves to be worshiped like the King of Heaven that he is and denies that Jesus was his only begotten son.
Here is Hebrews 1:1
The Supremacy of God’s Son
“1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,”
Indeed, he did talk to our fathers by prophets, the bible says, in fact the Bible continues to say:
“2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”
And in the gospel according to John, he says:
The Word Became Flesh
“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
To breakdown what I am trying to get at here is that the prophets spoke to the people, Jesus was sent down here to be God's only begotten son to be the next in line to be the ruler of the kingdom of Heaven and right here on Earth. When the word became flesh, the verses in Genesis that say:
“1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
6 And God said, 'Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.' 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.”
The first part talking about the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth without form and void and the part about darkness before God said “Let there be light,” that can be compared to someone who hasn't accepted, come to terms with or is trying to become awoken to the truth of the Lord God. To have faith is to welcome the light into your life. I mean, you can't see in total darkness, neither can I, so what can we do to have faith every day and to preserve the truth?
[Waits for the crowd to answer]
The only infallible truth is that of the Word, the Word is God, and the Word became flesh, that is the life, the presence and the essence of the Bible, the only authority for moral truth and the well-being of humanity.
